Oct 2025 Monthly Meeting
Please join us for our October meeting, our guest speaker will be Bill Hesbach talking about Thermoregulation and Ventilation in the Hive. In this engaging talk, Bill will discuss how honey bees manage internal hive temperature through thermoregulation—and how this critical function affects the colony. He’ll then examine the role of convection flows within the hive as a foundation for understanding natural ventilation. Finally, the session will introduce the concept of a condensing colony, offering a compelling alternative to the common practice of adding ventilation. Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of how ventilation functions in a natural hive environment and how to apply these insights in their own beekeeping practices.
Bill Hesbach is a Connecticut native with a background in engineering and a deep passion for bees. He is an Eastern Apicultural Society Certified Master Beekeeper, a graduate of the University of Montana’s Master Beekeeping Program, and currently serves as President of the Connecticut Beekeepers Association.
Bill runs Wing Dance Apiary in Cheshire, CT, a small-scale beekeeping operation specializing in artisanal raw honey and other natural hive products.
An experienced educator, Bill teaches bee biology and a variety of beekeeping techniques at regional beekeeping club meetings. He is an active member of the Eastern Apicultural Society, where he contributes to the Master Beekeeper Certification program, and is a frequent guest speaker at beekeeping seminars throughout the region.
His beekeeping interests include bee biology, flight dynamics, and the intricate relationship between local flora and bee behavior. Bill is also a published author, with articles featured in The American Bee Journal and Bee Culture magazines.
